What additional standard equipment must every new truck have from 2024?

2024-09-04

The new requirements came into effect at the beginning of 2024 and apply to all newly registered trucks in the EU with a permissible total weight exceeding 3.5 tons.

Three of the listed requirements have been relatively postponed to 2026–2029. The specific model launch date on the market does not matter; only the year of sale is important.

New Mandatory Equipment from 2024

The mandatory equipment for vehicles with a permissible total weight over 3.5 tons includes:

- rearview camera or sensors,

- emergency lights automatically activated during sudden braking,

- system warning about objects in the vehicle’s side blind spots,

- system warning about people or objects in the front blind spot when starting from a standstill,

- system warning about exceeding the speed limit on a specific road section,

- factory installation for ignition blocking until breathalyzer verification,

- system monitoring driving time and alerting about driver fatigue,

- system monitoring the pressure of the truck and trailer/semi-trailer wheels.

Mandatory Equipment from 2026 and 2029

In 2026, mandatory truck equipment will be supplemented with a system that monitors driver behavior and warns about inattention on the road.

From 2029, the driver cabin design must be modified to reduce blind spots by lowering the cab and increasing window sizes. This is intended to improve the visibility of pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, black boxes will be introduced to record driving parameters and allow reconstruction of the vehicle’s movements prior to a potential traffic incident.

The measures expanding mandatory truck equipment from 2024 aim to improve road safety for all traffic participants.
